The Alamo and River Walk in a day

The Alamo church and the river sit one block apart, close enough to see both before lunch. Add a mission in the morning and the boat in the evening, and one day gives you the heart of San Antonio.

The Alamo stands on Alamo Plaza, about one block up from the River Walk. You cannot see it from the boat, but you can walk from the church to a GO RIO dock in a few minutes. The four other Spanish missions lie south along the river, and together with the Alamo they were listed by UNESCO in 2015.

Here is how the Alamo’s timed tickets work, an easy plan for the day, where the missions fit, and the guided tours that put the Alamo and the cruise together.

The quick answer

Reserve a timed ticket for the Alamo Church, which costs nothing, on thealamo.org; the site opens daily 9 am to 5:30 pm (closed Christmas Day). Visit the church in the morning, walk one block to the River Walk for lunch, take the 35-minute GO RIO cruise, then the Tower or the cathedral light show at night. The small-group walk ($129) does the Alamo, La Villita, the cruise and the Tower in four hours.

Do you need a ticket for the Alamo?

Yes, a timed ticket for the church, which costs nothing. Reserve it on thealamo.org; the exhibit and guided tours are paid extras.

The Alamo says entry to the church is always at no charge, but reservations are required to help preserve the site (the Alamo). The grounds open daily from 9 am to 5:30 pm, last entry 30 minutes before closing, and close on Christmas Day. The Alamo Exhibit, with the Phil Collins Collection, and the guided battlefield tours are ticketed separately.

Building work continues on Alamo Plaza in 2026, so expect fences and detours around the church.

How far is the Alamo from the River Walk?

About one block. From the church, walk south a few minutes to the river; the Historia and Rivercenter docks are both close.

The boat does not pass the Alamo, and you cannot see it from the water. The closest docks are Historia, at 706 River Walk under the Market Street bridge at Alamo Street, and Rivercenter, at 809 E River Walk. The See Sight walking tour links the two on foot, starting at the Emily Morgan Hotel beside the Alamo.

How do you do the Alamo and the River Walk in one day?

Alamo in the morning, the River Walk and the cruise in the afternoon, the Tower or the cathedral light show at night.

A simple plan that works most of the year. In summer, keep the walking for the morning and the boat for the evening.

Should you add the San Antonio missions?

If you can, yes. Mission San José is the one to see; the four missions and the Alamo were listed by UNESCO together in 2015.

Concepción, San José, San Juan and Espada lie south of downtown along the Mission Reach of the river, managed as San Antonio Missions National Historical Park and listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Without a car they are hard to string together. The UNESCO missions tour picks you up downtown and visits all four plus the World Heritage Center in three hours, a good morning before an afternoon cruise.

Short on time? The premium city tour stops at Mission San José and the Alamo, then adds the Tower and the cruise.

  • The premium city tour ($159, 4 hours): hotel pickup, Mission San José, the Alamo, the Tower and the cruise.
  • The walking tour with cruise ($69, 1.5 hours): the Alamo as a pass-by, La Villita and the boat ticket.

How long do you need at the Alamo?

About an hour for the church and grounds, two if you add the exhibit. The tours with the Alamo inside give it an hour.

The church itself is small, and the timed slots keep it from feeling crowded. The grounds, the Long Barrack and the gardens take another half hour. The guided tours fill in the story of the 1836 battle, which is hard to picture from the building alone.

Guests on the small-group walk praise the balance: a guest in May 2026 noted the guide "gave a balanced historical perspective".

Is one day enough for the Alamo and the River Walk?

Yes, for the highlights. A second day lets you add the missions, the Pearl and a slower evening on the water.

The downtown sights are all within walking distance of each other, and the cruise takes only 35 minutes. What a single day leaves out is the missions to the south and the Museum Reach to the north. For the evening, read the night cruise guide; for the best tour overall, the comparison.
